Nutcracker

Synopsis
The Nutcracker ballet as we know it today resulted from an international collaboration of writers, musicians, and choregraphers. In 1816, German writer E. T. A. Hoffman wrote the short story of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Alexander Dumas, a writer of French and African/Haitian descent, created an adaptation of the story in 1844, which Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsk set to music in 1891. In 1892, Russian choreographer Marius Tepita transformed this music into a classical ballet. William Christensen set his 1944 American version on the San Francisco Ballet; then George Balanchine choreographed one for New York City Ballet in 1954. Our Nutcracker (The Remix) combines spoken verse, Tchaikovsky’s music, and songs and dance styles from 20 th & 21 st century popular culture. The musical selections for our show include:
