The Merry Wives of Windsor
by William Shakespeare
The Sacramento Shakespeare Festival and City Theatre at Sacramento City College present The Merry Wives of Windsor, by William Shakespeare, opening Friday, January 12, and playing through Sunday, January 28. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. There is one Thursday matinee on January 25 at 2:00 p.m., and two Saturday matinees, on January 20 and 27, at 2:00 pm.
Shakespeare’s only play to deal exclusively with contemporary English life and
written at Queen Elizabeth I’s request (to see “Falstaff in love”). Falstaff is
down on his luck and decides to gain some coin by seducing two worthy women
of Windsor. His plans go comically awry due to his lack of consideration of the
wisdom, worthiness, and wiliness of those wives. This Studio production is
set in Windsor, California in the mid-50’s, and will feature members of the
Sacramento City College Theatre and Film faculty in some of the major roles.
Performances will be held in the Art Court Theatre at Sacramento City College, 3835 Freeport Boulevard, in Sacramento. Parking is available next to the theatre on 12th Avenue. Patrons may also take light rail to the City College Station.
Tickets are $15 for general admission; $10 for students with ID, seniors, SARTA members, and persons with disabilities; and $10 for all matinees. Children under six are not admitted. Reservations are recommended and are available by calling 558-2228 or by visiting the website at citytheatre.net.
